A UAE Law Partner Delegated a Research Task Last Month. Nobody Knew It Was Still Open.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT

Task delegation failures in legal matters occur when work is distributed across a team without a central tracking system showing what has been assigned, to whom, what the scope is, and what has been completed. In UAE law firms managing complex matters with multiple fee earners, a delegated task re-delegated once becomes invisible to the supervising partner.

THE INCIDENT

A UAE law firm partner delegated a critical research task on a commercial dispute. To an associate. The associate split it. Delegated part to a trainee. The trainee asked a colleague for help with one section. The partner had no visibility into any of this.Three people. One task. Zero central tracking. The research came back two days before the hearing. With a gap.The section the trainee had passed to a colleague. The colleague had misunderstood the scope.Nobody had checked because nobody had a system that showed the task was still open, who held it, and what had been completed. The gap was closed. In one night. By the partner. The partner billed nothing for that night.Because there was no time to log it.

WHAT THIS REVEALS

The delegation gap was not a supervision failure. The failure was structural: no system through which the partner could see the status of every task on that matter without asking directly. In complex matters running across weeks and months, a partner who must ask to know the status of a delegated task will inevitably ask too late.

PREVENTION FRAMEWORK

1. Log every delegated task against the matter with assigned person, scope, deadline, and completion status updated in real time2. Require that any re-delegation is recorded and flagged to the supervising partner before it happens3. Build a daily task status view into the matter record visible to the supervising partner without asking4. Set scope confirmation at the point of delegation — assignee confirms understanding before beginning5. Conduct a task completion review before any significant matter event confirming every open task is complete

IF THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED

Prioritise remediation over attribution. Address the gap first, then review the delegation chain. The partner who closes the gap should log that time immediately — the billing loss from the original gap is compounded by unbilled remediation work if not captured.

NORDSTAR NOTE

Task delegation gaps are the most granular and most costly recurring failures in legal matters. They are costly because remediation almost always falls to the most senior person on the matter — the partner — whose time is the most expensive and least likely to be fully captured under pressure.
